I have been enlighten as to the merits of Bamboo needles.
Although the needles are smooth they are that bit grippier than metal or plastic needles making them the ideal choice when knitting lace or working with other fine or more difficult yarns. Many people also tell me they have found them warmer and lighter on their hand particularly those who have joint problems.

When it comes to crochet hooks I don't think you can beat a steel hook, light perfectly smooth and quick to work with; that is until you get above about 5mm at this point steel is too heavy and most hooks are then plastic, so I thought I would try some Surina wood ones. I was not that hopeful thinking they would probably snag and the hook would be ill defined. I was wrong they are lovely to work with and since I went a bit mad and ordered the hooks with the turned ends also look great. The hooks are made in India from the wood of the Elegant tree, whose branches grow very straight. The hooks are then hand turned and polished.

Pony Steel Crochet Hooks 2mm - 5.00mm £1.00
So many knitters don't know how to crochet and avoid patterns that require a crochet edging, which is a real shame. If you have mastered knitting then you will conquer crochet with no trouble.
A hook can also be used for picking up the stitches around a neckline so much quicker than with knitting needles. A drop stitch can be picked up and errors put right without pulling whole rows undone.
Many time unsatisfactory knitted edging can be replaced or put right with some crochet. If you are looking for a fun book to teach you how to Crochet take a look at
Stitch 'n Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker
Watch out for whether your pattern is written in US or English terms the stitches are differently named!!!!

Stitch Holders £0.85
For me the stitch holder is essential and the more I have the better. Never having just one project on the go and needing to borrow the needles to start another project most of my knitting lives on holders. I'm also a great believer holding stitches rather than casting them off, especially on shoulders. Shoulders can then be joined with a 3 needle cast off rather than ending up with a bulky sewn together seam. |

Split Ring Stitch Markers £1.25 pack of 24 markers in 2 diameters and mixed colours
If you are knitting in the round slip a marker over the needle at the beginning of the round, then you'll always know when you have completed a round. Just slip the marker as if it were a stitch and it will travel up your work .
Also place a marker every 10 rows and you'll never have to count your rows right back from the beginning. If you're working an increase every 7 rows place another colour marker on the row of the first increase and you will easily be able to see when the next increase is due.

The sewing up does have to done eventually and having the right needle does help. I find these 3 size packs cover just about everything. The finishing of you garment really can make or break the project and if you feel your finishing skills are letting your knitting down then I can highly recommend the book Finishing Techniques for Handknitters by Jane Crowfoot.
