The worst yarn I knitted with was Rowan All Seasons Cotton. At that time, ten years ago, there was not the wide scope of yarns then, and I did not have much money at the time. I knitted the jumper and because of an amount of synthetic yarn in it, when wearing it there was no subtlety in it, it felt like a dead thing. I do not buy synthetic yarn as I do not like the feel of it. I have since given this garment to a charity shop.

The combination of my hand dyed Flurry and Colinette Engima knitted in moss stitch actually makes a really interesting and attractive fabric. Unfortunately what looked like a promising project at the swatch stage, did not take into account how the knitted fabric would behave once it was knitted into larger pieces. The weight of the engima made the whole jacket drop alarmingly, especially the sleeves. Had the fabric not been orange and fluffy I may have got away with it, but orange, furry sleeves dragging down near my knees….you can see why it gets called the orangutan jacket. Apart from wrapping the sleeves around and using it as a straight jacket, I think I have no options but pull it undone.

I have just taken delivery of my next batch of undyed yarns. Amongst the regular yarns are 3 new ones. Eager to see how they would dye, I have been busy today trying them out. All 3 of the new yarns are dyeing beautifully and look vibrant and feel great.

No names have sprung to mind for them yet, but they are a merino/alpaca/silk super bulky weight yarn, its so soft and squeezable, I can see it being perfect for hats and for making a sloppy unstructured sweater. An alpaca, silk and cashmere lace weight than just glistens and feels gorgeous and 3rdly a Bluefaced leicester sock yarn. The BFL fibre just eats up the dye producing wonderfully strong, vibrant colours.

These new yarns should be available in the next 7 – 10 days.
